The unique legend LICINIAN LICINIVS IVN
Lot 2870
Licinius II, Caesar, 317-324. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.97 g, 6 h), Ticinum, 317-318. LICINIAN LICINIVS IVN Laureate head of Licinius II to right. Rev. IOVI CONS-E-RVATORI / P / T T Jupiter standing slightly left, holding thunderbolt in his right hand and long scepter in his left. RIC 71. Very rare. Somewhat smoothed and with a thin flan crack, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, ex Saint Paul Antiques 3, 8 April 2017, 527 (part of and expertly cleaned since).

This is the first emission from Ticinum after Licinius II was recognized as Caesar, and it is evident that the mint was uncertain about the correct legend to use. The unique legend 'LICINIAN LICINIVS IVN' appears only once in all coinage, specifically in this RIC number.
